Edge of Space in a MiG 29 Flight FAQ

Where can I fly the MIG-29 jet fighter as a civilian?

Such flights are performed only at the Sokol Airbase in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia (450 km from Moscow). Sokol airbase is not just an airbase – it also houses the facilities where the MiG-29UB is assembled, so you can be sure of maximum level of safety and service.

What is the lead time I have to book a flight on the MIG-29?

You should book your flight and select a date 65 days in advance. Such requirements are applied due to the long Security Clearance process. The access to the Sokol airbase is restricted for civilians. We can start the reservations once the contract is signed.

What are the medical requirements for civilian fliers?

Medical requirements are rather easy for civilian flights, though good health in general is necessary, but there are no special requirements. The flights are prohibited only for those who have had a heart, back or brain surgery. The pre-flight medical check is a formal inspection that includes a blood pressure check and a general briefing with a doctor about your current medical conditions. You can get a check done in advance with your local doctor to be sure, however, there is no requirement to provide any medical certificates. We have had a lot of clients in the age group of 60-70 years also, and they have enjoyed their experience in the MiG-29UB without any problems.

Is there an age limit to fly an MIG-29?

Yes. To perform a flight you must be between the ages of 18 to 70 years old. But we can discuss individually, if you fall out of this range.

Will I get sick during the flight?

Most likely not, provided you follow our simple guidelines. Care is taken to ensure your safety so you can enjoy your experience to the fullest. Less than 5% of people actually get sick during the flight. You need to avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the flight and eat light meals at the usual times on the day of the flight. Avoid taking anti-nausea medication, as it tends to make you drowsy.

What conditions can affect my flight parameters?

Your flight parameters such as Altitude, Top Speed and Aerobatic Maneuvers are affected by weather conditions and your ability to withstand G-Loads during aerobatic maneuvers. Air temperature at various altitudes, cloudy or clear sky, air density, etc. are some of the basic weather conditions that affect any flight. Your pilot will continuously check with you if you are OK at the start and end of every aerobatic maneuver — if at any point you do not feel good, please inform the pilot immediately and he will disengage from the maneuver, and land the plane safely to get you back to your comfort zone.

Why is the MIG-29 flight so expensive?

The cost is strongly dependent on jet fuel price. About 4 to 5 tons of jet fuel is used per flight. Also about 120 employees of the Sokol Airbase are involved in the Flight performance – security, navigation, medical, firefighters, technical staff, pilot, special laboratories, etc. Your safety is our priority and we do not compromise on it.

Can women fly in an MIG-29?

Yes. MiG-29UB Flight is available for all and a lot of women have dared to fly like a Top Gun.

Are cameras allowed at the air base?

No personal cameras, including use of phone cameras, is allowed at the base. Only our authorized camera crew can film at the base. We recommend you to order the professional video and photo package to capture your amazing experience.

Can my friends or family members accompany me to the air base?

For a nominal cost, you may take up to 3 persons with you to see your MiG-29UB flight. They have to go through the same security clearance process. They will accompany you to the airbase and will be able to see your pre-flight briefings, medical check, suiting up for the flight, etc. But they won’t be able to come close to the aircraft. They will see you take-off and landing from a distance of about 400 meters from the aircraft.
